Bier is beer, but not all beer is Bier.
Bier = German beer. Brewed according to Reinheitsgebot, the 1516 German purity law that effectively dictates Bier can only contain four ingredients: water, malt, hops, and yeast.
Beer = beer from anywhere in the world, no restriction on methods or ingredients, it could even be a double-hopped sponge cake stout with added strawberries and a twist of cracked pepper with coconut husk and foot of frog. Sounds like quite a delicious beer for sure, but it’s definitely not Bier.
1 Bier, 2 Bier, 841 Bier. We Germans do not pluralise our nouns. And we always give them a leading capital. These are not typos. They are specific and intentional.
